This review is from: Sibelius: Complete Symphonies, Tapiola, Karelia suite, Finlandia, The Bard (Audio CD)
At last - a complete set of these wonderful works under the late, great Paavo Berglund. He brings granite like integrity to each symphony and the 'minor' pieces are quite thrilling. I do wish that the set had been furnished with Berglund and Ida Haendel's peerless recording of the violin concerto but perhaps that would be asking too much!

Each disc is very well filled and this is stunning value for money.

Do not hesitate!

This is a tremendous set of performances, Berglund's best cycle I suggest. The playing of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is equal to any other set, and I mean any of them. This is an orchestra which has maintained very high standards over the years with a succession of conductors. I really hope that EMI - to whom thanks - will consider issuing a box of the Shostakovich symphonies and concertos which Berglund recorded in Bournemouth.

As a footnote, there's a mightily impressive Berglund performance of Sibelius 5 on the latest box of live Concertgebouw performances. At 100 or so for the box, most of us won't be hearing it but I am more than happy to live with the Berglund/Bournemouth performance alongside Barbirolli (also EMI) and Colin Davis (LSO live).

Thank you for your comment. Yes, the Shostakovich recordings were very good indeed. I learnt these works from these reading!

CD Review on Radio 3 played a bit of the Concertgebouw/Berglund Sibelius 5 this morning. Very powerful indeed. May I suggest you ask your public library to acquire them? Try his LPO live versions too - I really like them - warts and all!

Nobody has noted that, despite this being a budget reissue, the symphonies were RE-MASTERED for this release. The sound is terrific.

Maybe but why not as an SACD? Seems to me to be an awful lot of trouble to re-master a set that was already available on CD whilst the rest of the EMI catalogue is being remastered in 96/24 hi res for SACD. Opportunity lost. I'll stick with the existing set. I saw many of these performances live in the weeks prior to the recordings being made, the BSO performances were rarely uninteresting under Berglund but as always his performances lack emotional insight - he was such a serious man.

Well, fair enough, but I still think that 13.63 for the whole set of Sibelius symphonies and the extras is outstanding value for money. If you crave SACD then try the Vanska set on BIS which are superb and have up to the minute sound.
