This review is from: Untold Stories (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of this book, where Bennett describes his upbringing and home life. I also enjoyed the sections on various Bennett works, in particular the Lady in the Van; and I thought the notes on paintings and the part where he talks about his cancer very well written and interesting. However, what I did not enjoy was the diaries. Perhaps it's just my age - maybe I'm too young to appreciate all the name-dropping of personalities who are no longer in the public eye, but I found the diaries very tedious. I would have loved to have known about Bennett's partner, and how they met etc but he was mentioned only obliquely.
