I enjoyed reading this book and it even kept me up last night reading longer than I should have. The scenario is interesting and unusual and the leading characters kept my interest. Looking back on it, however, there are flaws. Simon is not much more than a nice man and his wife barely exists. His daughter Jess is rather stereotyped and why she is included is unclear. Anyway, she fades out completely in the second half. Jonathan is pretty well portrayed, as is his annoying wife, Kate. Most of the other characters, though, are the equivalent of cardboard cutouts.
The plot is very mysterious and that's what kept me reading. However, the dénouement is somewhat rambling, confusing and ultimately unsatisfying. The baddies are clichéd and - I'm trying to avoid spoilers - why anyone would build a special chamber, and in that precise location, for the purposes it's used for, remains for me a great mystery. All the wartime stuff seems a feeble and unconvincing add-on.
There are a few spelling and grammar mistakes of he 'he was sat' type.
