This review is from: The Connectors in Modern Standard Arabic (Paperback)
Having chanced across a recommendation for this book and seeing that it had a reasonable price, I decided to buy it. Little did I know that this tiny, grey book would offer-up an abundance of knowledge in such a delightful and easily accessible way! Being the typical student studying Arabic in a western country, and having no chance of being able to immerse myself within an Arabic environment, I was beginning to despair of ever being able to naturalise my speech and my writing - of being able to compose something approaching a coherent and intelligent essay. Cue this book! It is teaching me to make my writing flow, and to translate some of the eloquence in my English speech to my Arabic speech. The expressions found within are commonly used within the arab media as well, and so it aids listening comprehension as well.
Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the connectors being covered in that lesson, then it provides a short text to put the use of the phrase into context (which I am finding to be a valuable resource in its own right) and plenty of examples as well as questions to challenge and engage with the reader. It manages to do all of this without making the whole task seem like an overwhelming chore, in fact, it is a pleasure to read whilst out and about as you will always glean something new!
I'd recommend this book to those who are studying Arabic (MSA) formally, as well as those who are learning it by themselves, and even to those who would just like to build-up a comprehensive reference library. It requires a reasonable level of reading skill and is suitable for those who have covered a lot of basic grammar and are beginning to be able to understand basic arabic texts without any help. I myself am using it in conjunction with Al-Kitaab Fii Ta Allum Al- Arabiyya, and I find that it complements it really well.
Overall, an amazing little book!
