Nearly the perfect buy.,
This review is from: Samsung SMX-F 70 BP/EDC black, SMXF70BP/EDC (Electronics)
Having owned a Canon SD Card camcorder for the past 3 years, I decided recently that I needed a wide angle camcorder for scenic holidays and large interior family groups. I looked around, and purchased a Panasonic SDR-S70 with disastrous results - poor images, clicks and pops on the soundtrack etc (see my review), which was returned to Amazon for a refund with no problems, as usual.
Back to the drawing board! Look at all manufacturers, read reviews, check prices and draw up a shortlist.
After much searching, I happened to drop on to this Samsung SMX-F70, and checked the specs.
An excellent quality lens, Schneider-Kreuznach, a 52X Zoom (not that important),and, HD recording on an SD camcorder!
How can this be? Not wanting to go down the road of upgrading my PC,or buying a new Blueray player in order to edit and view HD video, and not seeing many reviews available, I decide to take the plunge.
What a good choice! The camcorder has three image quality settings, one of which is 1280 x 720 HD, and using this setting, the image quality is superb - sharp, bright, clean and colourful.
The images were edited, and shown on a 42 inch LCD Television with great results.
The menu is very simple and easy to understand, it is comfortable to hold, and looks good with it's black textured finish.
It does not have a wide angle lens, but image quality is paramount.
Now the downsides.
Auto focus is not so good, especially when zooming. It 'hunts', and takes a short time to lock-on and focus, but I can live with this, and take out fuzzy bits when editing.
To charge the battery, one has to plug into the mains with the cable and transformer supplied, open the screen, open a small flap, concealed by the closed screen, and charge the battery with both the flap and screen open.
Not very satisfactory, as both could get damaged.
The tripod bush is situated in one corner of the base, when for the past 50 years, all manufacturers of cameras and camcorder site it in the centre for ultimate stability. Poor design feature!
These are the only two reasons for a 4 star instead of a 5 star review.
To overcome the former, purchase an IA-BP420E battery( 3 times the power of supplied Samsung battery) from 7dayshop, and a separate charger from Ex-Pro, both available through Amazon for great prices.
This model of camcorder was only introduced in September 2011, and has not received much publicity or many reviews, so, take my advice, and hunt one down rapidly before it disappears.
Since writing this review I have used the camcorder for about 2 weeks and the thing will still not focus when zooming.
This is not dependent on lighting conditions at all, and continually "hunts" when trying to lock on to a subject.
I can not live with a photographic product that does not focus automatically. Who wants blurred video?
It has gone back to the supplier for a refund.
Think twice before buying.
