A great insight into porn and its fans,
This review is from: Dirty Fan Male: A Life in (Rude) Letters (Hardcover)
Jonny Trunk's text is actually funnier than the letters and on one level the book is facinating and on another its disturbing. Firstly the erotic fixation of the correspondents is extremely dysfunctional at almost any level you'd care to mention, their writing is infantile and crude and they seem educationally subnormal, to me, anyway. Of course it's easy to laugh at gullible idiots and that's what this book is really about so its a pleasure in the most guilty sense.
What is far more disturbing is the knowledge that Trunk and his sister, soft-porn star Eve Vorley (real name: Emma Benton-Hughes) took advantage of all of these idiots. That for me is where I found the humour starting to dry up. Between them, the siblings cooked up a scheme to offer tat at high prices to their dysfunctional punters even detailing that one "video" was nothing more than slide show of still images. It may seem funny but consider that Vorley lives in a £15 million home in Essex which many of these suckers paid for.
The curious thing is that "Dirty Fan Male" is clearly an unintentional morality tale; the mixed-bag of losers who bought into the "dream" Vorley was peddling aren't the villains here; in fact they aren't even obscene. What is obscene is the absolute lack of conscience throughout the entire book in that there was nothing wrong in fleecing all the sexually and/or intellectual dysfunctional fans of these women where the feminist argument about porn is completely polarised, here the men were exploited and manipulated to an extraordinary degree so essentially a few people could make a huge amount of money.
A funny and sometimes depressing book at the fundamentally rotton way porn is sold in the UK, it is certainly an eye-opener at just how sharp these operators actually are. Morally they're reprehensible and if Trunk's book does nothing else, it at least shines some light on that.
