This review is from: Derek - Series 1 [DVD] (DVD)
I find it hard to believe that not more people can see that Ricky Gervais is buying himself a 'heart of gold' on the back of people with learning disabilities and elderly people, both of which I work with. From the depiction of the Care Home in Derek I have serious doubts as to whether Ricky Gervais has ever set foot into one. Real Care Homes have absolutely nothing in common with the peaceful holiday camp he depicts filled with handsome well-behaved patients and stress-free staff always on hand to counter Derek's every whim. I could perhaps overlook that fact for the benefit of fiction and entertainment if it wasn't all drooling in sentimentality with the music to go with. How dare Ricky Gervais give us lessons about caring for the 'weaker links' and play the guilt card so heavily in such a sugar-coated manner? No wonder the man moved to Hollywood! This is actually very condescending of him and insulting to all the hard working people across the country doing this demanding and stressful work for a minimal wage. I can't help thinking that if Ricky Gervais really cared for people with learning disabilities and elderly people (as opposed to using them to propel his career pulling a few heart-strings), the show would display more insider knowledge of the world it is set in, then it could have been a real eye opener as well as a good comedy. To me it is neither I am afraid.
