2.0 out of 5 stars dull patchy boring oh and derivitive, 26 July 2007
This review is from: Systematic Chaos (Audio CD)
Just a heads up for anyone thinking of buying this album DONT.
Dream theater have really surpassed themselves in terms of the number acts they so blatantly rip off. This particular album has shades of muse metallica rush and pink floyd as well as the tried and tested method of "expanding" on previous works of their own (see metropolis scenes from a murder).

Whilst this melding pot of influences could produce something fantastic however this album sounds tired dull and boring. Repentance is the epitome of what I am saying (the intro is taken from train of thought but slowed down) it drags its sorry ass through what seems like an eternity without going anywhere. The middle section with overlaid vocals particularly rankles and I sat just wishing it would end.
Prophets of War sounds EXACTLY like Muse which wouldn't be so bad if it was elaborated upon and made their own but it is so blatant that it pains me to listen to it. Constant motion is probably the best track on offer but again the "creative borrowing" is too apparent i.e. the verse part being a rehash of ride the lightning era metallica.

Finally the last straw comes in the terrible faux Satanism and absolutely ridiculous lyrics contained in In the presence of my enemies pt2 how anyone can take this seriously really is beyond me

So in conclusion if you can live with listening to an overly long and pompous version of the aforementioned artists work as well as dream theater making a mess of their own previous efforts then be my guest I will however be returning this garbage to the store ASAP.
