This review is from: Raised On Rock (Audio CD)
The story of Elvis's last recording years, in my opinion have often been unfairly slated. In fact he cut many great tracks in the years from 73-76 but the Raised On Rock album has long been derided. It probably did not help that the lead single and title track was a bit of a mis-fire (reaching the lower edges of the chart)and was similar in vein to Charlie Rich's Rollin With The Flow (a much better song) recorded a few years later. Also that it came as a low paced affair after the success of the Aloha special But the album contains a real interesting mix of country, soul-funk and pop that few others were recording at the time apart from maybe Jerry Lee Lewis. Jerry Lee actually did a good version of Just a Little Bit which Presley covered here. Find Out Whats Happenin is on the money soul with shouted girl singer chorus and For Ol Time Sake is pure class with a great laid back late night feel to it. I Miss You or Sweet Angeline should have been the singles or a double A side and would probably have fared better with both getting a committed performance. Girl Of Mine though should have been re-recorded but its a mediocre song at best. Are You Sincere is another pleasing ballad with only some slightly off key backing vocals at the very end. Three Corn Patches is not everyones cup of tea but I like it and again the girl group backing help drive along a nice bit of 70's rock n roll. Its a "good" rather than great album which might have been better received had they combined the best tracks with some of the later tracks recorded at Stax in December of the same year but as always RCA's relentless release schedule won over. Also the title and cover shot suggested a raw and rocking album which although it has its moments is not the whole story with the balance of better tracks being soul-funk or ballads. Maybe this really was one occasion where a properly posed studio photo or home shot snap would have been better for the cover. Nevertheless I feel its a better album than its given credit and personally I think better than Elvis Now or The Fool albums which are often rated higher and better yet was to come with Promised Land, Good Times and Today albums proving that the game was'nt up yet. Give it a go though as it reveals a direction in gospel-country-soul and funk that could have been explored further had he been given the right material.
