why are films always set in the past or the future, how annoying - **SPOILERS**,
This review is from: The Book Thief [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I GIVE AWAY KEY PLOT MOMENTS IN THIS REVIEW,ONLY READ IF THIS DOES NOT BOTHER YOU.
it seems every film made is either set in war time or victorian time or some other time in the past or set in a so called futuristic future with many films predicting by now we would have flying cars as a every day thing but none of it ever comes true which is a good reason to leave the future alone in films, and as for the past, its already happened, why revisit it again.im already sick of hearing about world war 1 thanks to the 100 year anniversary.
this is not really my type of film so im surprised i find myself even giving it 3 stars,i only went because i was invited and got in for free,i would never have paid cinema prices to see this,i might get the dvd/bluray if it ever comes down to £1 or £2 just for the special features out of curiosity more than anything else but the film itself is not worth another watch.
unlike musicals or comedy films where songs get more catchy or jokes get funnier the more you hear them, with films focusing only on the "waiting to see what happens next" once you know then its unwatchable a second time.
things like this as a documentary would be fantastic but as a film its too realistic and fact based to be entertaining.
the film also has an extremely annoying voiceover in parts, apparently the voice of death, not only is the voice actually annoying but it takes you out of what little story is there and serves no purpose for being there at all.
a positive for the film is the acting, especially of the girl who is the main focus of the film and the only character on the street still alive by the end of the film which i found extremely stupid how coincidentally everyone but the main character died, just makes it even more none believable despite being based on real life nazi war.
i do have a slight interest in hitler and nazi things so any documentar i usually watch, but making it into a film just seems like film makers cant think of new ideas so just make another war film which anyone could do.
however unlike other war films it does tell the story from the point of view of a german girl and shows that regular germans were victims themselves where as british made or british based films always seem to portray every german as a bad guy and to this day there is still some anti german british people about which is extremely immature.i have been to germany to visit a girl i met online and she let me stay for a few days, friendly family, even visited her school and everyone was friendly,if not fascinated by my english voice,so much so i ended up reading a small section to the class.
obviously like any city or country there are some far less than perfect people and i did encounter one such person working on trains but other than that everyone was friendly and i doubt its just because it was near christmas time.
hopefully this film if nothing else, helps people realise germans were just as much a victim as everyone else.they claim to be struggling for food and having to cut down to 2 meals a day,i only have 2 meals a day now, although i do have the odd snack inbetween like a bag of crisps but as for meals it depends what size portion they mean.but it shows not only britain were rationing and struggling, and also the main girls family had someone hidden in their house and had to hide him from soldiers as they would have been probably killed and previously the girl was seen shouting down at a lake with another character "I HATE HITLER" so thats hopefully another way to show people germans didnt like hitler.
its hard to write a review thats informative without giving spoilers,im not really sure how its possible and i know i have failed miserably hence the spoilers warning at the start.even quoting lines could be seen as a spoiler or explaining the plot in more detail than the synopsis for the film.the only thing i have really given away is everyone on the street dying at the end,but for people interested in this sort of film theyll still enjoy it in the same way everyone loves titanic film despite knowing the ending beforehand.and those who prefer entertainment in films like me wont care who dies or lives.
overall a decent film, great sets and fantastic acting, decent plot and a nice twist on the typical poor british evil germans type of film, and even though its not my typ of film,if it hadnt been for everyone dying except lead character and that annoying voiceover 3 or 4 times throughout the film,id have given it 4 stars probably,

You sound like a very narrow minded person. I found the film moving and it showed mans inhumanity to man through the eyes of a child perfectly. With regard to the voice over I found this extremely comforting as I have just lost my sister and it madde death not so frighteneing as I had always considered it. All in all a wonderful film one I will order on DVD and watch again.

I've read the book and found it a very interesting and purposeful read. Your review smacks of someone very negative, boring and ... someone who enjoys a moan. Despite your poorly written and very tedious review (I skimmed it), I'm going to buy the film.
