2.0 out of 5 stars Poor shadow of its former self, 16 Jun. 2010
This review is from: Hergest Ridge (Audio CD)
I had waited for this release for a while, my LP (!) is worn out, I missed the originla CD, and wasn't prepared to pay silly money for a "collectable". I have now listened to the "Re-mastered" version several times, and I am seriously disappointed. Overall, it sounds like a re-mix of mostly sub-standard passages from the original sessions, with no cohesive atmosphere - which the original had in bucket-loads. Example: Who let the 7 year-old on the plastic Woolworths guitar in to the moody keyboard pasage 12 minutes into Part 1? And Part 2 has lost a lot of it's edge and become muddled. On the positive side - the sleeve notes are really good. Informative notes, and an interesting looking walk along Hergest Ridge which I will make sure I do one day. I know things move on, and technology now provides far better recording quality than was possible in the 70s, but I'm sorry Mike - can we have the original re-released. Please.

The original 1974 mix is available as part of the deluxe edition but I think it should have also have been released as a single CD, rather than the 2010 version. Punters coming to the album for the first time might think that the 2010 version is what the album is all about....and yes: I agree there is a bit of nasty, rather shrill out of tune/out of time guitar part way through Part One in the 2010 remix that ruins the atmosphere. I don't understand why that was emphasised. Just don't get it at all.....

i agree ,why after all this time did you not buy the deluxe version, come on its only £11.00,so hardly collectable prices ,and in their you get the 1974 original mix on cd for the very 1st time unaltered.
so if you are an oldfield fan,do yourself a favour get rid of this single disc thing and invest in the proper edition,2010 remix, original 1974 mix plus original demos and on disc 3 the dvda of the 2010 mix in 5.1 surround- all for £11,its the version i bought and well worth every penny, and yes i did own the original on vinyl but it went in a divorce settlement.
