A Tribute Album,
This review is from: Octavarium [U.S. Version] (Audio CD)
I was really looking forward to the new Dream Theater album, having been a fan for quite a long time. So when the new shiny CD arrived I was very excited. However that didn't last for long.
'Root of All Evil' is a great track and really true to DT, I love 'These Walls' (what an awesome riff). But to be honest the rest I am either indifferent to or dislike.
'The Answer Lies Within' is just pure cheasy drivel, and 'I walk beside you' is cheasy drivel with a U2 treatment. The next two songs are good songs but do belong on a Muse album as they are that close to Mr. Bellamy and co's work. 'Sacrificed Sons' is fairly DT, but very average DT.
I have read many reviews saying how 'Octavarium' recreates the grandure of 'A Change of Seasons' and I can see why they'd draw the similarity: both 20+ minutes long, lots of different sections to the song. But whereas 'A Change of Seasons' is a classic, 'Ocavarium' is just overly long. It has it's moments but generally is too long and average.
If you want a better Dream Theater album, buy 'Images and Words' or 'A Change of Season' if you want something more progressive, 'Falling into Infinity' if you want something more comercial but still good (at least in my opinion), or 'Train of Thought' if you want something more metal.
