2.0 out of 5 stars Not great., 13 Oct 2011
This review is from: Madagascar Wildlife (Bradt Travel Guides (Wildlife Guides)) (Paperback)
Really nice glossy colour photos but the written detail is not very informative and the number of species listed is not very extensive. Not bad for a quick reference, but if you are interested in more detail about behaviours or a more comprehensive guide to wildlife, I'd look elsewhere.

Alison Weir says:
It is inevitable that a book covering the whole gamut of Madagascar's wildlife will not even come close to covering everything down to species level (unless you want to pay a fortune for a multi-volume book that you'd have to push around in a wheelbarrow!). Madagascar is home to more than 200 mammal species, almost 300 birds, and 700 amphibians and reptiles, so even if this book didn't cover butterflies/caterpillars/crabs/millipedes/spiders/scorpions/insects (which it does, as well as sections on each of the main national parks and habitat types) there wouldn't even be room for one sentence on each species, let alone photos of them all. If you want specialist field guides, they are available. The guide to lemurs weighs 1.6kg and has 2-3 pages on each species; the guide to mammals weighs 1kg and has about 1 page on each species; the guide to reptiles & amphibians weighs 1.7kg and has about 5 species per page; the best guide to birds weighs 0.8kg and has 2 species per page. I agree that having this level of detail to hand in the field would be awesome, but I have yet to meet anyone who wants to carry 5½kg of books around with them in the forest. The Bradt Wildlife guide, then, is not intended to be a species-level field identification, but an overview of all the various animal groups with more detail on the species most likely to be seen by tourists.
