Depth, storyline and action - proper 'Next Generation',
This review is from: Mass Effect (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
The developers, Bioware, have made a bit of a name for themselves in the RPG genre. But when you consider games like Mass Effect it's not hard to understand why.
Many people, myself included, considered this a must-have even before it was released. Reports of the in-depth storyline, character and dialog interaction and blend of in-action shooting and stratgegy made it sound like something that had rarely been attempted on such a vast scale.
Luckily, Bioware pulled it off - and they did it very well.
Yes, some may criticise the game for its numerous technical issues and glitches that crop up here and there. But to be honest, most of the time you're so immersed within the gaming 'world' and story that you'll barely notice any of this anyway.
But even when you have completed the game the first time round, there's still ample re-playability; from being either male or female, being personable or playing a more renegade character - there is a lot of ground to be covered that you simply will not explore to it's entirety the first time you play.
If there was any criticism, it would be aimed at the side-missions; many of which are generally pointless, take place on barren worlds and add little to the overall storyline - but strangely, you'll still be compelled to play them regardless.
Overall, this is a terrific game - but it's not for the casual gamer. Being the nature of RPGs, you will need to spend many hours playing through this. But to be honest - that's no bad thing!
