Where has simplicity gone?,
This review is from: Alela Diane & Wild Divine [VINYL] (Vinyl)
I have been at two concerts by Alela Diane in Brussels, one three years ago and the second only yesterday. I regret that she is now surrounded by five instrumentalists. Her texts and songs are better served by a minimal band than by a full blast one. In the earlier concert she was only accompanied by her father on the guitar and the mandoline. It sounded a lot better.
Her best to date is To Be Still, which is very melodious, much more so than The Pirate's Gospel. I think old instruments like the mandolin give a more authentic sound for her songs than guitars, electric or otherwise.
I do love her music and I am willing to be patient. I will even attend her next concert in Brussels. But I will not buy her Wild Divine CD.

William J. Walker says:
Then you are missing out.
The album features plenty of acoustic instruments. How can you submit a concert review as an album review?
You even state you won't buy the album!
I actually thought her second album over-produced compared to her first, and the simpler versions of the songs on the vinyl only 'Songs Whistled through White Teeth' EP, infinitely better than the album versions.
I believed in the artist though and rather than rush out a review expressing these negative feelings I thought I'd give the album a chance to settle in, particularly as the even more `produced' "Headless Heroes" album proved to be a real grower and confirmed that she has the ability to operate brilliantly in different styles.
I would suggest you should give the album a little more time before posting your review, but I forget, you haven't even got the album.

You are giving a review of an album you haven't heard?
