As no one has bothered reviewing this superb album, I figure I will. All ten tracks on this album are classic, and this album is a minor modern masterwork. This guy really knows what he's up to; he creates laidback retro pop of the highest order. Those who think 'retro' is a negative trait, listen to this album and you may feel differently. There are echoes of Dylan here, but it's mostly more pop-orientated stuff circa Mamas and the Papas. It's hard to describe the easy magic of the songs, but 'Sandy' is about the best sun-drenched summer pop song you could hear. Then there's the melancholy longing of 'Summer Long', the hook of which lingers in the mind like a summer cocktail on the tongue. There's nothing blatantly emotional about the material here; it is unimposing in the best sense. It forms a soundtrack to a person's gentle disillusionment, while at the same time managing to cheer your spirits. The voice is relatively high and fey, but with a certain amount of ironic bite to it. If you want a timeless distillation of melodic pop and rock, without gimmicks or an imposed persona, then buy this album.
