Best. Game. Ever.,
This review is from: Final Fantasy VIII Platinum (Video Game)
Only recommended if you're a gamer who doesn't take their RPGs at face value, FFVIII is a good 100+ hours of fantastic gameplay, stirring story and jaw-dropping FMVs.
On the face value thing, one of the best features of this game is the total control given to the player; you can make this game as difficult or as easy as you like. Herein lies the beauty of the junction system. If the powering up of the character has left you with bosses that are too easy to defeat, you can chose to stop levelling up! You can make no use whatsoever of the junction system, neglect to draw and collect magic, forget to upgrade your weapons, run away from all non essential battles and therefore keep your characters' attributes low. Some people crave difficulty, and this game lets you chose your own level.
If on the other hand, you love levelling up your characters, FFVIII allows you to customise them to your preference. Your GFs can only be summoned if they are assigned to a character, and so the character learns unique traits and abilities. There is so much fun to be had.
Still too weak a challenge? Take on the Omega Weapon who lives in Ultimecia's castle. What a guy!
The characters themselves are delightful; Squall's downright rudeness is refreshing and often extremely funny. The storyline is as strong as a video game one can be. The ending FMV is astounding, at once tear-jerkingly beautiful and horrifying. the sidequests are interesting and challenging (Bahamut/Ultima Weapon/Chocobo forests). So much to do, to see, to collect... I highly recommend this, the great Final Fantasy divider, the game the fans argue most about. Try it for yourself. Even 5 years on, I'm still hooked. Nowadays a session playing the addictive card game, Triple Triad, bestows on me the same benefits as yoga on Madonna. Bring on the Shockwave Pulsar!
