Puts both fun and mental into a fundamentally fresh crime series,
This review is from: The Mentalist Season 2 [DVD] (DVD)
The second season of the Mentalist picks up roughly where the first one left off - a fresh crime series with none of the now typical high budget high tech forensics, cops dressed like high society celebrities or scenic helicopter shots of the surroundings. Patrick Jane (played by Simon Baker) is the ex-medium turned police consultant, who uses his acute powers of observation of people to solve crimes.
The Red John mass murderer case continues to hover in the background but is less defining than in the first season - the scene for it has already been set and the second season focuses more on the interpersonal relationships in the CBI team. The 'will they / won't they' thing is present throughout and without spoiling it I think the team did a good job to keep the balance right here.
So if you are looking for an amusing crime show, where the protagonists often bring a smile to your face (not that the crimes would, don't get me wrong) the Mentalist is still hard to beat, even in the second season. And the introduction of several new, colourful characters, all in some ways related and complementary, such as Sgt Bosco's team, keeps things interesting.
Whether Red John gets caught, well, dive in and find out!
