Waiting for the Doctor,
This review is from: Lucie Miller (Doctor Who: The New Eighth Doctor Adventures) (Audio CD)
Penultimate story in the fourth season of Doctor Who audio plays, which feature Paul Mcgann as the Doctor and Sheridan Smith as his companion Lucie Miller, this is the first in a two part story that acts as a season finale.
And it brings together lots of characters and ongoing stories from throughout the season so casual listeners are advised to steer clear and listen to them in proper order.
But those who have heard these all the way through get the beginning of what should be a very memorable finale.
It's one long episode, that runs for just over fifty three minutes, and is complete on a single cd.
It follows on from the end of the previous story which saw the Doctor pick up a distress call from Lucie, and then backtracks to fill us in on what's happened to her.
Lucie narrates the bulk of the tale, and describes how people on Earth start to fall prey to a terrible sickness. The small cast and audio sound design do work very well here as it gives a great feel of people being caught up in the middle of a crisis, fighting to get home to loved ones as things spiral out of control around them.
And then the Daleks turn up....
What happens next is a story of resistance as people fight the alien overlords. And nobody comes out of it entirely unscathed.
And then the Doctor arrives. Has an unexpected reunion. Because just when he's finally returned to save the day Lucie might lose him again.
As a story of fighting the Daleks this is very good stuff, ending with some superb sound design to create a very memorable battle. But it's not just about that. It's about the effect the Doctor has on people. About how some will never lose faith in him, even when others might start to doubt. And the emotional notes it hits are superb, both in the writing and the acting.
Regular listeners will also get a hint of the Dalek's plan - it's a little bigger in scope and ambition to anything in previous stories - and find the true agenda of another character.
It all ends on an excellent cliffhanger, which leads into To the Death (Doctor Who: The New Eighth Doctor Adventures), the concluding part of this tale. On the basis of this, it should be a very memorable listen.
There's a trailer for that towards the end of the disc, and nineteen minutes of very good interviews with cast and crew after that.

The begining of the end what a great build up to a fantastic finale.
