4.0 out of 5 stars Hmm...Judgement reserved, 27 Aug. 2003
This review is from: Rhythm: the Complete Countdown Recordings (Audio CD)
I saw Makin'Time a couple of times in the mid 1980's and live they were superb. When "Rhythm and Soul" came out it was probably the best album released out of the second wave of mod revival bands and it still stands the test of time. The tracks written by Makin'Time from the album are still superb and stand out.
Live, the cover versions stood up well yet the studio versions are weak and lack emotion. Their version of "I Take What I want" is possibly the worst I've ever heard. "Boom Boom" is the same. I remember seeing them perform it live and it was powerful and infectious. The studio version was that good I went to the next track after about 20 seconds of it.Why they never recorded studio versions of "Land Of a 1000 Dances", "Keep on Running", "Show Me" escapes me.
Tracks such as "Honey" (both fast and slow), are outstanding as they always have been, yet the extended version of "Feels Like It's Love" is truly apalling. it would be more at home at some sort of ravey type event rather than being a second wave mod revival band. I listened for about 5 seconds, skipped to about 40 seconds and then had to put another CD on.
Makin' Time were completely unique in that they were a mod band that had soul and that can never be taken away from them.
HOWEVER.... This CD contains tracks which make it appear attractive to those who remember them and want the extras having seen them live. The extra tracks really are not worth it as they are not really representative of what you remember. If your copy of "Rhythm and Soul" is worn out then buy it to replace it. Otherwise I wouldn't bother........
