Fine and concise account of Trial by Ordeal,

This review is from: Trial by Fire and Water: Mediaeval Judicial Ordeal (Oxford University Press academic monograph reprints) (Hardcover)
There may not be much competition in this field, but Bartlett's little book on trials by ordeal is by far the best: readable, concise and reliable. In it you will find all you want to know about the rise, rational, and practice of this method of proof, bizarre to us, but not without efficacy in a culture suffused with religious faith. It concludes with a convincing analysis of its relatively sudden decline after 1215 when the Catholic Church removed its imprimature. First rate.
