Dead Sheep Magnificence,
This review is from: The Joke (Paperback)
It is funny, there is a sort of simple dead sheep magnificence to the book as party aparatchiks smother free thinking in 1950's Czecholslovakia. The Joke is written in the first person and we have a fairly reliable narrator. Lyrical and long it is an excellent train book. Kundera's voice peeps through the prose and show an avuncular, muscular man; in grasp of his materials.
There is a vanity to Kundera's prose, regards women, that may not fit today (2014) as well as it once might have. Selfish loving is the name of the game and Kundera sees women as ripe ready to be plucked. Whether today's reading of a book published twenty five years ago is an accurate summary, only time will tell.
