4.0 out of 5 stars Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 - In the Crosshairs, 25 April 2013
This review is from: Sniper 2: Ghost Warrior - Limited Edition (PS3) (Video Game)
I haven't reviewed anything in a while, I haven't felt the need to, but with Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 getting such divided opinion I feel compelled to add my 2 pence worth on the game.

The first thing you must consider when deciding to buy this game is whether or not you enjoy sniping. If laying in a dark damp ditch for several minutes waiting for your "mark" to wander off to that perfect secluded spot from where you can snipe him is not your bag you will not enjoy this game. This is not your standard first person shooter. Throughout the entirety of the game you are armed with nothing but your sniper rifle and a rather pathetic excuse of a silenced pistol. In a full on fire-fight you stand precisely 0% of success. This is a game about staying in the shadows and picking off your enemies one by one.

And its there where much of the enjoyment from this game comes from. More often than not you are accompanied through missions by your "spotter". It is his responsibility to scan the environment and advise which of your targets is the largest threat at that particular moment and direct you to take him down. When done right this is a hugely rewarding experience. One by one your spotter will tell you which enemy to take out until the area is clear. If you follow his instructions to the tee you will take everyone down without being spotted and it makes you feel like a total sniping machine. You can deviate from the spotters routine but more often than not it results in all hell breaking loose and I wouldn't advise it.

I've knocked a star off the review for the AI, both friend and foe. There are moments in this game where your spotter tells you to shoot one enemy while he handles the other. On more than one occasion I have obediently taken out my guy whilst my AI partner does nothing resulting in me getting shot. The consistency of the enemy AI is a problem also. Some enemies will allow you to sneak past them with no bother at all whilst others have almost super-human perception. This results in you never knowing how the AI will react in any given situation and can lead to an alarm being raised that really shouldn't have.

I only completed the single player campaign, I wasn't remotely interested in the multiplayer aspect. On the whole the campaign was good, with some really standout moments. But there were some moments that dragged or were a pain just because of the below par AI. About half way through the game I seriously considered jacking it in but I was glad I persevered to the end.

Ultimately, this is by no means the greatest FPS ever made. It has serious flaws and frustrations, but if your the kind that always choses a rifle in Call of Duty Multiplayer or enjoyed Sniper Elite V2 or indeed the Original Sniper Ghost Warrior this should be something you enjoy.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not shoot,
the courage to shoot the things I can,
and the wisdom to hide the bodies.
