Disclosure - Settle,
This review is from: Settle (Audio CD)
Rumours of the album's brilliance have been exaggurated. Not greatly exaggurated by any stretch of the imagination but exaggurated nontheless. I also think rumours of Disclosure's musical style harking back to the 90's to such an extent to warrant a revival are also exaggurated.
What I will say is that when it's good, Settle is - gosh! - very very good indeed. It's sublime. It's brilliant. "White Noise" is, in my opinion, one of the best dance tracks ever recorded. "Latch" is really good. "You & Me" is a pretty great radio track and track 13, "Confess to Me", is probably second only to "White Noise" for best album on the track.
The rest of the album, to me at least, is a bit bleugh. It's all filler. Good filler in places, but filler all the same. Not all the tracks have the vitality of "White Noise" or "You & Me". Of course any album is going to have its stand-out tracks, no matter the genre, but there's such a big gap in... in... effort, I guess, a feeling that they've made 4 or 5 tracks they are delighted with and have 30 more minutes of an album to fill with a record label demanding a completed album whilst they're still hot.
Hm. Still a good buy though. The good bits are excellent, the bad bits are still a cut above what most other people are making.
