Sill E Man says:
Hard drives might not work if they require more power than the USB 500mA specification provides.
Many drives need double-that, but are still marketed as USB 2.0 compliant... which is a lie.
I use them daily, but have to work around this issue. It's probably the one you experienced.
Anyway, a hard drive's speed (20-30MBytes/sec on fast USB 2.0 I find typically) would be wasted on this rubbish device.
This is because, even though it was designed and marketed in a USB 2.0 world, they made it a pathetic USB 1.1 (12Mbps 'Full Speed' ['Full' for USB 1.1 i.e. ancient technology and far too slow for modern purposes])!
Your devices need to have the Certified USB 2.0 High Speed or similar sticker or writing on them (and actually live up to that claim, not fake it). Now we have USB 3.0 too, for dodgy manufacturers to abuse. Many fool manufacturers never used the full potential of USB 2.0 properly... but they'll sure waste our time wading through the dross, won't they just??
Belkin have marketed MANY such 'lemons' leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of those of us who want a working, well-designed device - although Belkin's CABLES remain a safe bet
Boycott, and vociferously, stupid design like this, honestly, it's the only way to make the marketing fools see sense!
