This review is from: Essential Guide to Lyric Form and Structure: Tools and Techniques for Writing Better Lyrics (Paperback)
Songwriting consists of a number of different elements: Lyrics, melody, harmony and arrangement.
This excellent book focuses on just one element of lyric writing: Lyrical form and structure. It aims to give you tools and techniques to analyze the building-blocks of your own songs and help you write better lyrics with less pain and guesswork than would otherwise be required - and it succeeds in this aim.
Pattison's writing is down-to-earth and easy to read and comprehend. The material is well laid out on the page and ideas progress clearly and logically from one section to another. Each chapter contains a wealth of information and there are plenty of exercises for you to try out. The narrow focus of the book means it doesn't get bogged-down trying to do everything. It also means that although the book is quite short (102 pages) there's not an ounce of filler anywhere so it's good value for money. Once you're familiar with the subject matter the clear chapter headings mean you can easily use the book for reference.
If you're looking for a book on song structure you can't go far wrong with this.
