Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is an excellent piece of design, which has managed to create a lightweight and stylish iron combined with the additional power of a steam generator but on a relatively small footprint. Sat next to a traditional steam generator iron, this is impressively compact and is it’s sure-fire number one selling point.
The performance of the iron is pretty exemplary considering its size, offering a fairly impressive 240g steam boost at 5 bar pressure, which stacks up well against its bigger brethren. The design of the tank allows it to contain a decent volume of water at 1500ml, meaning you can iron for longer without having to refill.
The bugbear I have is in the proprietary anti-calc cartridges. A pack of 4x “PerfectCare Pure” anti-calc cartridges cost around £30 (at time of review), and Philips predicts a life of 3 months per cartridge under typical use. If you adhered to this formula, this could work out rather expensive. Higher up the range you will find generator irons which have an “easy-decalc” system that simply collects calcium residue and you empty it out with zero on-going costs.
As an alternative to this, you can simply use demineralised water instead of constantly replacing the cartridge, but as it’s a steam generator iron, you can expect to go through plenty of that too. In a nutshell, if you’re unfortunate enough to live in an area where limescale is a problem in your water supply, you might want to think again before buying this particular iron, and go for one which offers a more eco-friendly calc-trap solution.
It is something that you will have to weigh-up yourself, as if you value the lower initial cost outlay and the smaller size of this iron compared to larger alternatives, you might be happy to go along with the longer potential life-time outlay if you choose to use the bespoke cartridges. If you live in a fairly limescale free area though, you could be more than happy with what this iron has to offer and would benefit from it’s brilliantly small size.
I am therefore prepared to offer it 4 stars.
