A vision of divine hell,
This review is from: Prayer (Hardcover)
I generally admire Philip Kerr's books--most especially the splendid Bernie Gunther series. With "Prayer" though, he lost me. This very dark and cynical story of the serial murders of social critics and seekers of social justice jumps the genre tracks into something horrific (literally) and asks the reader to suspend all sense of reality. The underlying theme that surrounds and motivates the FBI agent protagonist leading the murder procedural is such a pessimistic vision of faith that I had real trouble accepting the premise and the novel's outcome. It just goes too far for me. And it will probably deeply offend any reader who is religious.
Give this one a miss and wait until the next Bernie Gunther episode arrives.
