Dr Watson investigates. Robert Ryan has created a complex murder mystery in the trenches and set Dr Watson - biographer of Sherlock Holmes and now an older widower - to investigate. It is very well done but I did sometimes wonder what book I was reading, a history, a mystery, a treatise on the position of women in Edwardian Britain.
I think I particularly liked the introduction to the medical system that supported the soldiers in the trenches and getting a bit of an understanding of the how soldiers were rotated in an out of the trenches. I also liked Watson, older, sadder but dogged and determined. Robert Ryan consulted with a lot of people to give his Holmes and Watson some authenticity and I think it works.
I'm glad I read it,although sometimes I found it a bit modern and/or a bit neat, it is intelligent and interesting.
