This review is from: Churchill: The Hollywood Years [DVD] (DVD)
This film is sadly dated, even though it's less than 10 years old, I think partly because many of the "stars" are transient, having often burst at their brightest in the mid to late nineties, and featuring John Culshaw's invariably rubbish impression of Tony Blair dates things even more.
The premise is extremely funny, but doesn't sustain the film in the face of disappointing performances from several of the "stars", and Neve Campbell in particular. That said, Christian Slater revels in his vision of what Winston Churchill SHOULD have been like. There is a weakness in an (American?) assumption that the flaws of the likes of Messrs Churchill and Blair, are unseen by people in the UK, which means that some great opportunities for jokes at their expense have been missed in favour of a more deferential treatment.
With a bit more edge, this could have been an all time classic, but it ends up being a bit like an extended Comic Strip Presents with Christian Slater and Neve Campbell in the lead roles.
