'The Blue Pencil' is essentially a well researched and detailed account of events leading up to the outbreak of the second world war from the point of view of a fictional young journalist who gets involved in the unmasking of and reporting on the machinations of various historical characters, especially Neville Chamberlain.
The story begins in 1936 and, as someone who grew up during those times but was generally too young to understand just what the adults were talking about then, I found many of the details enlightening, fascinating and in political terms depressingly revealing.
The general period background is accurate and gives a good overall picture of life in the late nineteen thirties.
The narrative line does get slowed down at times by the historical factual details but I found the book a good read. It would also make an excellent contribution to the reading of young people studying the causes of the second world war.
