Quality Hand Made in Sheffield,
This review is from: GENUINE SHEFFIELD MADE Garden Knife with Rosewood Handle
This is a high quality knife hand made in Sheffield by A. Wright & Son. The blade is made from high carbon steel, not stainless steel, hardened and tempered in house and not out-sourced as so many so called Made in Britain things are. High carbon steel does need a tad more looking after than stainless steel, but a smear of 3 in 1 oil or vegetable oil with keep it in good condition. This blade takes and keeps a good edge and is easy to touch up with a leather strop (old belt or similar).
A lot of Sheffield made pocket knives were always intended as working knives for working folk who knew how to maintain a good edge and the high carbon steel blade facilitates this. Some knives advertised as 'stay sharp' or 'maintenance free' will remain so for a while and then be beyond the average person's ability to re-sharpen.
The blade opens against a firm pressure and reassuringly stays in place meaning there is little danger of it closing unexpectedly. It is not a cheap and flimsy mechanism that could fold back onto fingers if a little cutting pressure is applied.
This knife will remain a workhorse for years to come and is testament to the quality of materials and skills that still make up genuine hand built pocket knives made in Sheffield.
I have three different A. Wright & Son pocket knives and all three are built to work and last. All sharpen to razor sharp if need be. They all keep their edge and require only a minute or two on a leather strop to bring them back to their best.
