This review is from: Rock Your Body [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This is the dance fitness DVD from the inventor of the Nike RockStar workout Jamie King. Previously the only dance instruction you have been able to get is on the Nike Woman website.
The DVD includes a warm-up, teaching sections of part 1 and 2 of the dance, a dress rehersal of the dance as a whole, the performance, cooldown and a strength section. The extras include a brief introduction to Jamie and the dancers. Also is a breakdown of one harder dance patterns of each of the two halves of the routine. In total the DVD is about 70 minutes long, however the routine is about 1 hour including the strength section.
This is taught like a dance instructional DVD not an aerobic fitness one. The moves are not broken down but taught at increasingly faster tempos in add-on style. So, the 8 count is taught at 1/4 , 1/2 tempo and full tempo. Then it is added on to the previous patterns at 1/2 and then practised at full speed.
Throughout there is a DJ in the background giving the impression of a nightclub setting. The music is R & B, it is inspiring enough to get you to groove along to without being overbearing.
The dress rehersal is the full routine part 1 and 2 at 1/2 tempo and both Jamie and his dancers and changed into the clothes they perform in i.e black with added 'bling'. The final section is performed in a club setting in front of a cheering audience to give you inspiration. Jamie cues throughout in case you get lost.
The full body strength conditioning section is the most traditionally aerobic fitness orientated part of the DVD, but still remain hip hop flavoured. This is done without weights. As someone who regularly strength trains I think this section should have been modified to add them as an option and I have used 1kg when doing this anything much heavier could be dangerous and most of the arms moves are performed at a quickly.
Jamie is an encouraging and generous instructor. Some of the dance moves have names so you can recognise them as you go through the routine to give you inspiration. His background dancers are skilled and graceful but manage not to be intimidating. The dance is difficult enough that you will not get bored and will continue to return to the DVD in the future. There are not many moves that require you to cross your feet or perform very complicated moves. However, some coordination between your upper and lower body is helpful along with some prior experience of dance or aerobics. I do think that a beginner could learn this with practice though.
I would recommend this DVD to anyone who has been looking for a dance workout and has the patience to learn these refreshing and uplifting dance moves. Hopefully this DVD will be the first of many.
