This review is from: Cleopatra [Masters of Cinema] (Limited Edition Dual Format SteelBook) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
The actors and actresses deliver wooden performances and stilted dialogue, and the direction is somewhere between the primary school Christmas play and Carry On Cleo, who would have thought hams could go down so well in Egypt! Claudette Colbert is especially bad as Cleopatra, being more Lower East Side than Middle East and the male actors are often so camp that they seem like drag queens who have slipped into the wrong costumes. When it comes down to it the real stars of this film are the opulent set design and the stylistic lighting. The production is lavish and you can't help but wonder whether this would have been fantastic as a silent but in this form its more of a curio of 1930s popular entertainment. The blurb of it being "an erotic tour de force" are way off the mark although I do recall noticing Ms Colbert was surprisingly flat-chested during one of the many tedious scenes. Approach it as a piece of junk culture than high art and you are sure to find it enjoyable.
