This review is from: Place-names in the Landscape (Hardcover)
Written by the country's leading expert on English place names, the late Margaret Gelling, this book must be one of the best I have read on the subject. While it covers fewer place name elements than AH Smith's EPNS volumes, it does discuss all of the most common ones (and several less common elements as well), describing, in detail, their relationship to local topography, land use and (where relevent) administration. It goes without saying that the book is based upon many years of thorough research. It is also very well written and, consequently, easy to read - even for amateur local historians like me.
