Child 44 - simply a stunning book.
Secret Speech - simply an aweful book.
Booker prize nominee Robert Smith must have wept as this book was printed, I refuse to believe that he was really happy with this. Its repetitive, and plays out more like a badly-written holywood production... way too many non-substanstance moments, littered with explosions. The characters are less than two dimensional, and you never really 'feel' for any of the characters, culminating in a pain ending. I did keep plugging at it, and did finish it, and though toward the end there were a few glimmers of greatness, the book simply failed to recover.
