This review is from: Before The Fall (Audio CD)
As a long time Fall fan I'm delighted to see this album released. A collection of 24 original tracks which have been covered by Mark E. Smith and pals over the past 25 years.
Some of these tracks are well known, whilst others remain in the file marked `totally obscure'.
Amongst the highlights are Lee Perry's "Kimble", covered by the Fall for a 1992 Peel session and later issued as a single, and Lonnie Irving's "Pinball Machine".
Even if you are not a Fall fan, this is still a terrific collection; where else are you going to find the avant-garde prog rock of Henry Cow nestling next to a Sister Sledge 70's disco classic, alongside country, rockabilly, blues, US 60's garage rock, UK 60's beat and reggae, all of it utterly wonderful. Packaged in a cardboard gatefold sleeve with art work by the always excellent Savage Pencil, the booklet contains detailed liner notes up to Ace Records usual high standards. The good news is that there still remains enough Fall covers to warrant a second volume of this collection. I`m looking forward to that!
