A cookbook that's both inspirational and fun!,
This review is from: Ramsay's Best Menus (Hardcover)
Ramsay's Best Menus is Gordon's latest cookbook, which has been released to coincide with his new TV series "Ramsay's Best Restaurant". It contains 52 menus, which consist of some of his favourite recipes. Each menu has a recipe for a starter, main and dessert, and are designed to make the best of seasonal produce - which is why the recipes are divided into "all year", "spring", "summer" or "autumn/winter". The recipes are also arranged by type of cuisine. For example, you have the "Spanish summer menu" of chunky gazpacho/paella/chocolate mousse, the "British all year menu" of champagne oysters with cucumber/roast beef & Yorkshire pudding/apple pudding, or the "Italian autumn/winter menu" of pumpkin risotto with Parmesan/venison with sweet & sour peppers/pink grapefruit granita.
Recipes 001-156 are the recipes that make up the various menus, and are displayed on spiral bound sliced pages (which are cut into thirds), a concept I find interesting. This is because is allows you to "mix and match" - you can flip through the various recipes, and match them to suit your tastes. This gives you an opportunity to create your very own menus, giving you up to a staggering 140,000 menu choices. Each recipe is beautifully photographed, and the photo of the dish is always on the left of the recipe (regardless of how you decide to mix and match recipes). I always think this is important, as I like to know what the dish looks like before I embark on cooking it.
Recipes 157-190 are recipes for various accompaniments and basics, e.g. mustard mash, shortcrust pastry, chicken stock, pesto and vanilla ice cream. These aren't displayed on the aforementioned sliced pages, which is probably because they don't actually fit into any particular menu. These recipes do not have accompanying photographs, but to be fair, most people already know what chicken stock looks like.
This cookbook is definitely a great purchase for both home and professional cooks alike, and will inspire many great meals for anyone who owns it.
