4.0 out of 5 stars why did they put these albums together?, 16 Dec. 2009
This review is from: The Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot (Audio CD)
It's not clear what condition Captain Beefheart was in when he recorded 'The Spotlight Kid', but judging from the vocal performances on most of the tracks, none too clever. It's got a couple of really good tracks on it, but quite a lot is rather dirge-like. In sharp contrast 'Clear Spot' has to be one of his best, no, the best albums ever. There's everything from driving blues to wistful love songs, all in Capt Beefheart's inimitable (and this word is used correctly here) style. Hence the title of this review and the star count; about 2 stars for Spotlight but 5 for Clear spot.
For more balanced genius, Shiny Beast or Safe as Milk might be better bets...

The Sair says:
Never understood why The Spotlight Kid is not rated (and indeed the band and Beefheart himself say the same) but for me it is sublime, and the slow ponderous nature of it is what I love about it so much. As for his voice, I think it sounds great on this album.
