5.0 out of 5 stars JERRY GOLDSMITH A FORGOTTEN CLASSIC, 26 Jan 2011
This review is from: Bandolero (Audio CD)
Anybody who is interested or collects soundtracks will no doubt have a Jerry Goldsmith album in their collection.
The Bandolero soundtrack comes from 1968 Starring James Stewart, Dean Martin, Raquel Welch when the western movie had almost changed forever. No longer did we have the good guy with the white hat and the bad guy with the black hat. This was probably due to the influence of Sergio Leone, Ennio Morricone and their work on the 'Dollars' trilogy. And so the anti-hero was born, usually unshaven, rough looking - both good guy/bad guy were indistinguishable from one another.
In this soundtrack Goldsmith tries veer away from the usual Spaghetti sounds of the time and indeed succeeds by creating a very melodic opening track (Main Title) but can't resist the little whistling sound in the background (homage to Morricone?) before the full orchestra with trumpets in the foreground make for a great first track. To be fair the supposed setting for the movie was Val Verde Texas to the badlands of Mexico.
Jerry Goldsmith uses all moods of music to create the location of the movie sometimes using a mexican flavour to make it authentic. This is an absolute must-have soundtrack from Jerry Goldsmith. The album has ten tracks:

1. Main Title
2. The Trap
3. El Jefe
4. The Bait
5. Ambushed
6. Sabinas
7. Dee's Proposal
8. Across The River
9. A Bad Day For A Hanging
10.A Better Way

I have heard from some sources that an expanded edition of this album is available somewhere out there at an over the top price, if you are so inclined, but very few copies, as it is now deleted. If you like Jerry Goldsmith and his own unique sound, then don't miss
out on this soon to vanish album.
