This review is from: Ourika ; Edouard (French Edition) (Kindle Edition)
These two short novels are real gems, tackling the theme of social prejudice and the suffering it causes to pure hearts.
Edouard is a provincial young man of middle class, who qualified as a lawyer following in his father's footsteps. Against the wishes of his mother who knew too well the ways of the world, he was introduced by his father into Paris society hoping this would advance his son's career and social standing. Edouard falls in love with an aristocratic girl who reciprocated his love. But social prejudice in those days was such that the obstacles were insurmountable, with a tragic end to their love story.
Ourika was brought to France by white settlers in the Senegal. She was adopted by a French lady and received the best of education. She excelled in all sciences and arts, and was admired and admitted into high society. Yet, she came to realise that she was not on equal footing, and that she would not be able to share the same aspirations as the natives because of the very social prejudice. The novel gives an insight into the emotional and psychological suffering of a person not allowed to assimilate on equal terms with their peers simply because of their origin and of their different physionomy.
