Two games for the price of one?....Not Really!,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Commandos Battle Pack (Mac/DVD) (DVD-ROM)
Those of you familiar with the original Commandos will know what to expect. A fiendishly difficult strategy game played out in realtime on lush background with some nice AI touches from the 3rd Reich!
Commandos 2 picks up exactly from the original with even better graphics, new characters, more weaponry and more intelligent foes. The learning curve is not as steep as the original with the option of playing the levels as Normal, Hard or Very Hard. Unfortunately the subsequent levels you unlock can only be contested at the difficulty with which you completed the initial mission... but this is a minor point.
I love the game play that often involves some study from various angles and a few aborted attempts. The game can be quite non-linear as there are usually many ways to achieve the same result or objectives within the overall framework. The big addition to Commandos 2 involves being able to enter buildings now and a free angle camera allows for some great action inside. You can also exit through windows, snipe through or from windows and throw missiles such as grenades in and out of buildings. It really is an excellent game worth 6 stars if strategy is your thing!. One tip: a two button mouse really helps on this one..so consider getting one if you're on the mac one button soap bar!
Commandos 3 seems to use a different game engine and different controls from C and C2. I found it very glitchy (although it could be my system...quick silver powermac G4) and trying to do too much, none of which very well. The graphics are larger but the controls confusing. It does however offer an online multi player gaming in varous co-op and battle modes which I must admit I haven't tried but I was very disappointed with this game.... particularly after C2!
