The heart attack connection,

The notion that we lived off a diet of animals when we were hunter gatherers is false. Hunting was a very small part of their activities and gathering plant based foods was the main part. Every time tests are conducted on debris found in the teeth of early humans they find one thing, starch! Every successful civilization on the planet fuelled using a carb of some sort. The Romans gladiators were called barley men because their diet was plant based. They preferred to eat barley instead of meat because they could fight better. Their lives depended on winning so they wanted to eat the foods which gave them the most energy and strength, carbs from plants! Hair samples analysed shows that 200 Roman gladiators found in a burial site were all vegan!
The worst diseases on the planet are caused by eating animal protein and fats. It's scientific fact that eating over 10% of your diet consisting of animal products can cause cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, MS, autism, alzheimer's etc. The oldest people in the world live on a diet containing very little animal products (1%-5%)and live to 120+, these people live in places like okinawa and india. The human body is physiologically very close to herbivores as are the closest related animals.
The author of this book has no education to be advising about history or the human diet. This book is ignorant and offers poor advise which puts peoples health at risk.
For accurate information about the natural human diet I suggest people read 'the china study' and work by Dr John Mcdougal, Dr Esselstyn, Dr Ornish, Dr Barnard, Colin Campbell etc.

Another person misled by the vegan agenda! All long lived indigenous societies valued animal fat as their preferred food as shown by the studies of Weston Price. The root of all modern diseases is metabolic syndrome, caused by a constantly elevated insulin level from carbohydrates.

Thank you Gough. Missionaries that lived with indigenous peoples all found them to be long lived and disease free, on their native diets of primarily animal foods. Within just one generation of them adopting the modern grain based diet of the white man they developed the same diseases as modern man.

Weston Price studied two tribes in Africa who were genetically alike. One tribe ate a diet rich in animal foods, the other tribe lived on a diet high in grains. The ones whose diet was predominantly of animal origin were taller had stronger physics and had a level of stamina that overshadowed the grain based tribe.
By the way Phil, the gruel that roman soldiers subsisted on consisted of fermented barley and fish. The fermentation process made the barley more digestible (neutralizing the phytates in grains that block mineral absorption, rendering the grain useless unless you have four stomachs like a cow). The fermented fish was in itself a power food as observed by the Inuit people whose diet consisted of almost no plant based food.

Only if you consider the number of people as your measure of success. You can keep more, unhealthy, people going on a grain diet as grain is easier to grow than meat. Still not good for them though, hence the fact that when societies move from hunter/gatherer to farming, life expectancy drops back, but birth rates go up.

Thanks for the input Dj, it's all outlined fantastically in the groundbreaking book Guns, Germs and Steel. I have spoken to some progressive farmers/scientists who beg to differ that grain is easier to grow than meat. They state that amazing things can be done if much of the land was used as pasture land, including land that is not arable. Therefore creating superior soil by the roaming of animals (bison) like the fertile Great Plains were before we destroyed it with grain mono culture. Grains are not the natural food for cattle either, as any bio-dynamic farmer can tell you.
