5.0 out of 5 stars Knopfler is a guitar maestro, 22 Feb. 2011
This review is from: Sailing To Philadelphia (Audio CD)
'Sailing to Philadelphia' is a beautiful and remarkable album by Mark Knopfler and I urge you to add it to your collection. The title track is stunning and is based on a novel by the American writer Thomas Pynchon ('Mason and Dixon'). The opening track 'what it is' is a lovely piece of Celtic rock and I love the fact that James Taylor and Van Morrison feature on this record. The album's theme is the links between the USA and the UK and Knopfler is able to craft beautiful songs with poignant and funny lyrics. Knopfler himself draws the analogy of water and how the water of the Tyne can be linked to the Mississippi delta. 'Baloney again' is a touching song about segregation in the deep south in the 1950s and the album contains 14 tracks so is very good value for money. Mark Knopfler is a supremely talented musician and writer-forget about the 80s headband and the dodgy fashion of Dire Straits-Knopfler is a music man and in his solo work he returns to music with a real feel and flair-very reminiscent of the early and brilliant Dire Straits albums.
