This review is from: The Trip [DVD] (DVD)
I got this as a Christmas present, having seen a few episodes earlier last year. My recollection from watching the show first time round was that it was fantastic. Would the DVD live up to the hype in my mind?
Well the simple answer is yes, and in more ways than one. The series is a masterpiece of (sometimes) intelligent comedy with pathos and some insights into the human condition thrown in for good measure as well. Yes that sounds pretentious, but because of the the way Steve Coogans character is portrayed, and the nature of some of their discussions I can't think of a better way of describing it.
One of the impressions that I didn't see in the episodes I watched earlier in the year was of Alan Bennett. He seems to feature quite a few times on the DVD. Endlessly reminising and saying "Dudley and Peter". Wonderful stuff and also featured in the extras, which is another reason to get the DVD.
In the extras there is 50-55 mins of outtakes. Including a long exchange where Rob and Steve attempt to do the following voice over. "Extreme Measures with Trevor Eve, Friday at 9 on BBC1". I not sure I can explain why this so intrigues me (and its very funny in places), but it sort of sums up the whole series for me.
A highly recommended 2 DVD set.
