This review is from: Imperium Legionus: A Detailed Study of the Roman Army During the Empire (Modelling Manuals) (Hardcover)
If ever you get to know Jose Sanchez Toledo, you will find he is not just a good author, but he has in him every quality in a person you would wish to find. By just focussing on this publication, however, bears emphasis on what a great guy he is and how much anyone in the right mind would like to know him. Having read the book, you would need to go no further.
It may only be over 100 pages long, but it's the quality rather than the quantity that matters. Anything you would wish to know about the Roman military - the legions, the parts of the Empire where they were sent, their weaponry and how and why they used them, the food they ate, their battles, their pay - the list could go on, is all compacted into this brilliant book which is already my Bible. Whatever resources that the author couldn't use, he intensified his research by referring to archaeological evidence, which all fitted into a novel about an imaginary centurion who led a cohort of auxiliaries from Hispania in a campaign in Britannia. This was reinforced with brilliant artistic studies by the artist Angel Garcia Pinto.
Once you pick this book up you would not want to put it down. You could read it as many times as you want and you will always learn something new - it's one of those books. Brilliant.
