A Business Handbook of Biblical Proportions,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Book of Yo! (Instant knowledge) (Paperback)Review of The Book of Yo!
This book is destined to become a stock favourite with two kinds of student; Students of life and Students of Management and Business.
It is small, easy to read (jargon busting is a main topic with the author) and highly inspirational.
It is easy to read because of the clever format which means that each double page spread is a "nutshell" in its own right.
On each left hand page Simon Woodroffe gives us chunks of autobiography. On each right hand page he gives the reader a paragraph or anecdote that mirrors or emphasis the previous points and then below that a list (the authors favourite bit).
Although form does not replace content, the way in which this book is set out makes is it so easy to digest.
Contents wise the book reviews Woodroffe's personal and professional life and extracts lessons that he has learned. The result is a collection of ideas and realities that range from the deeply personal " I got divorced in my late 30s and it threw me to my knees" (page 18) to the super-real " Sometimes when I look at the mountain to climb it seems overwhelming. When I chip away a little bit at a time, I am surprised at how quickly the pile is reduced"
The success of The Book of Yo! is that by focusing on the specific - it is also general. The author tells us how he started designing stage sets for touring Rock bands and progressed (and regressed) via estate management into developing the Global Brand that will be Yo!. He shows no fear in admitting personal failures and by going "open" on the reader, Woodroffe is able to show how to expand his own experiences into ones that will benefit the reader. For example in the Chapter "I am serious about my business and at the same time I don't give a damn" he explains how he plays good-guy bad- guy in his own head to avoid stress and to make good decisions.
It is a book about personal confidence and business risk, it shows how we all have the opportunity to make that lucky break but we have to train ourselves into recognising it when it is there.
