This review is from: The Rise of the Reluctant Innovator (Paperback)
Reading the introduction it’s clear that Ken Banks himself has been something as an innovator and that his pursuits have taken him around the World, frequently meeting and working with some remarkable people. Here he brings together the stories of 10 of these individuals – people who have found themselves in situations that they found intolerable and in which they were determined to act, changing countless lives along the way.
The change-making behaviour described takes place across the World and in fields as diverse as mobile technology, patent law and sibling separation. These are clearly deeply significant innovations and the scale of each entrepreneur’s achievements is mind boggling. Throughout, while their stories are quite different, it is clear that they share a number of qualities – tenacity, boldness, energy and the ability to take people along with them being essential to their success.
Banks acknowledges that the label “reluctant innovator” is one that has been the cause of much debate and it’s certainly not the term I’d use. True, the individuals featured did not set out specifically to do something different or new and that it was circumstances that led them to taking the directions they did, but it is clear that they recognised that their skills could be used in ways that others had not had the ability, the will or the imagination to do previously, at which point, they threw themselves wholeheartedly into their causes.
Each of the entrepreneurs featured tells their story in their own “voice” and inevitably, there are some whose style is more fluent and accessible than others. Similarly, I found it much easier to connect with some of the situations and interventions than others – in fact I found some of them quite hard to fathom. Nonetheless, as always, I’m pleased that the stories have been captured and shared here as a demonstration of what can be done even in the most difficult circumstances, with a little inspiration, a lot of support and an immense amount of hard work.
