Great compilation of Miles through all his styles,
This review is from: Circle In The Round (Audio CD)
Released during Miles' retirement in the late 70's this is a series of unreleased outtakes but of an amazingly high quality. Side one is late fifties with a fantastic version of Love For Sale with the Kind of Blue line-up. Side 3 is Miles In The Sky territory with a great boogaloo featuring the three keyboards in a 'cutting competition' - it warms my house up everytime I put it on. Side Four has an interesting alternative take of Sanctuary (Bitches Brew) but Guinnevere is a bit of a struggle after 17 minutes. The standout track is the title tune, Circle in the Round. Written by Miles at a time when he wasn't actually writing much it has an eerie quality to it reminiscent of Nefertiti with an quirky feel produced by the celeste replacing the piano. Like Nefertiti, the piece is almost a drum concerto with the amazing Tony Williams roaring and rattling away for 26 (twenty-six) minutes.
A must to fill in the gaps between the classic studio recordings.
