Great introduction to shaving properly!,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I decided, after 20 years or so of using expensive cartridge razors, plus a recent surge in ingrown hairs, to take the plunge and buy a double edged razor. After a little research, including the videos of a you tuber named 'Mantic59', I settled on the 33C, as it came highly recommended for beginners.
The Razor arrived within a couple of days, quicker than expected, and the initial disappointment at the size of the razor gave way to quiet satisfaction at the solid build quality, the chrome finish and knurling, and the overall balance of the razor. It's smaller but significantly heavier than your average plastic cartridge shaving 'system', and came complete with a Merkur blade for instant use. All I needed to do was sprout a couple of days growth for a worthwhile shave!
The shave quality itself was exceptional, although this being the first DE razor I've ever used, you can take that with a pinch of salt! The sound of the blade cutting through my bristles, the feedback from the blade, the razors manoeuvrability, and the lack of aggressiveness all contributed to a satisfying shave, which produced a very close shave with less irritation, and, so far, I believe has aided in reducing the number and severity of my ingrown hairs (in conjunction with other methods). Even the anticipated bloodbath from the slightly raise mole on my cheek failed to materialise, so if this type of razor fills you with trepidation, fear not!
In summary, if you're tired of forking out for expensive, irritating and non recyclable cartridge blades, and want to shave like your Grandpa, then I would certainly recommend the Merkur 33C, at the very least as an introduction to DE shaving. For me, I'm completely taken by it, and now look forward to shaving! I'd also recommend purchasing a decent brush, good soap/ cream and a sample selection of blades as well, so that you can find the brand which suits your skin and beard type.
